Kuala Lumpur

I know it has been a loooong time since my last post.... but now I am back and have a lot to tell!! I spend the weekend in Kuala Lumpur (KL).... So I left Singapore for the first time! It was such an awesome time and the city is a great spot to visit in Malaysia. We went in a group of five from the NUS and later Vanessa and some others from the NTU joined us. Philipp, Peter and me were the first to leave to KL on Thursday morning. Our bus left around 10.30 from little India in Singapore. Finding the bus was already difficult enough... There was a lady sitting in a small cabin who apparently belonged to the bus company we booked our journey with. She told us to go to the end of the building to a parking lot for buses and there it would arrive. Well, this parking lot was just a narrow street where from time to time a bus passed by.... Well we went back and forth a few times asking the lady again and again, but we seemed to be at the right spot so we stayed there and with a delay of 20 minutes our bus arrived. We were surprised by it's quality and the provided seats. The bus was as big as a usual long distance travel bus, but was reassembled to fit only 28 passengers. The journey was very exciting and took about 7 hours in the end. The Malaysian border was probably the most exciting part of the trip (We got a new stamp in our passport). Then we arrived in KL.... It is so different compared to Singapore and Europe. This is what I expected an Asian city to look like. It is just not as modern as western city's are and you see much more people on the street. The hotel we booked was right in the middle of China town in the centre of KL. We could not have chosen a better place to stay. Chinatown is so amazing..... many small shops where you can buy fake brand products for less than 10€. This includes brands like: Armani, Hugo Boss, D&G, LV and many more.... Very cool. They also offer great food for very low prices. Everything is cheap in KL compared to Singapore or Europe. (The most expensive meal at McDonalds costs 3,50€). Of course we visited all the different famous spots: The Petronas towers, the KL tower, the Batu caves and various temples. But I think what inspired me the most was the Chinese Halloween on Thursday evening. The people in Chinatown invited us to take part and therefore we lined up paper on the street which was burned later. In addition a few costumed people representing evil spirits walked around. We met nice people from the UK with whom we spent the evening there. The ceremony lasted the whole night and we enjoyed being among so many happy people that wish for luck. I would recommend it to everyone! The other cool happening was Malaysia's National day on Monday. We did not really know about it until a few days before our departure. We saw the different tanks preparing for the parade and we also watched some protesters on Saturday and Sunday asking for democracy and anti-corruption measures. Fortunately all of it went on quietly without any incidents. In total it was a really cool trip and the best choice for a first journey outside Singapore.
